Why Choose Green?
Carpetland USA is dedicated to preserving our environment by offering a variety of eco-friendly flooring. Choosing from our selection of green floors means making an environmentally conscious consumer decision. But what does it mean to the environment when you choose green floors?
When a flooring product boasts that it is a green floor it refers to a substance or manufacturing method that utilizes renewable and/or recycled material or energy sources. Non-renewable materials are those that come from sources that, once depleted, are gone forever.
In addition to flooring products marketed as green, there is another category called sustainable. Sustainable flooring products are those that minimize impact on the environment at each phase of their life cycle.
The most popular green products include cork, bamboo and linoleum. In addition, many new and existing flooring products qualify as sustainable. These include natural carpets made from cotton, recycled or reclaimed wood and carpet, wools and grass, stone, ceramic tile, chlorine-free resilient, recycled rubber and VCT vinyl.
CORK
Cork floors are created by extracting only the bark from the tree, meaning the tree is left completely intact. Each tree will grow a new layer of bark that can be harvested approximately every 8-10 years. Cork absorbs sound, offers great insulation qualities, and is available in a wide variety of colors and styles.
BAMBOO
Recent advancements in bamboo flooring present finer detail and darker shades than were previously available. When bamboo is cut the roots remain intact so fresh new sprouts can grow. Since bamboo is a fast growing grass, it can grow from sprouts to harvesting in three to five years, providing more flooring per acre than trees.
LINOLEUM
Linoleum flooring is manufactured from renewable resources, such as linseed oil, resin, wood flour, flax, cork powder and pigments. Its durability makes it suitable for high traffic areas, and it comes in tile, sheet, or rug form for flexibility in installation. Linoleum is also naturally biodegradable and anti-bacterial, meaning there are no chemical agents used in its manufacturing or maintenance.
CARPET
Sustainable carpets use post-consumer and industrial materials, biodegradable dyes and solutions, and recycled wastewater.
HARDWOOD
Sustainable hardwood floors are made from recycled wood and/or antique woods that offer a timeless, weathered look. Sustainable wood is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and comes from managed forests, lessening the impact on the environment.
CERAMIC
Ceramic floors are primarily made from natural and renewable resources and are exceptionally durable.
STONE
Stone floors offer low extraction impact on the planet and are exceptionally long lasting.
RESILIENT
Resilient floors are available chlorine-free and are typically made from recycled vinyl and plastics. In this form, it is a highly durable product with a long life cycle.
RUBBER
Rubber floors, a popular trend lately, are made from recycled tires and other materials and typically have less negative impact on the environment than non-synthetic rubber products.
VINYL
VCT vinyl tile, made primarily of limestone, is long lasting and offers a high performance rating.
